Mental Health Benefits of Exercise

Yoga for Energy and Focus: Movement, Breath and Rest

A balanced yoga practice can combine active movement with quiet attention. The sequence below begins with standing poses, adds gentle strength and finishes with breath awareness and rest.

Mental Health Benefits of Exercise

Standing arrival

Stand with the feet comfortably apart. Notice the floor beneath the feet and let the shoulders settle.

Gentle sequence

Raised-arm movement

Inhale naturally as the arms rise. Exhale as they lower. Keep the ribs relaxed.

Chair Pose variation

Bend the knees a small amount and move the hips back. Keep the hands on the thighs or reach them forward.

Low lunge

Use blocks beneath the hands and a folded blanket beneath the back knee.

Warrior II variation

Choose a stable stance and keep the front knee within a comfortable range.

Wall-supported balance

Keep one hand on a wall and lightly lift one heel. Change sides slowly.

Quiet rest

Lie down with the lower legs on a chair or sit supported against a wall.

Breath and attention

Keep the breath natural throughout the active part of the sequence. During the final rest, observe the breath without forcing a count.

Common mistakes

  • Moving faster than the breath can follow.
  • Using balance poses away from support.
  • Locking the knees.
  • Skipping the final rest.

Practice limits

Stop when movement causes sharp discomfort, dizziness or loss of balance. Use props and a smaller range. Learn stronger holds and advanced balances from a qualified yoga teacher.
